It's good to return India after 20 years in Europe 🌍
Many Indians have a question in mind that it is good to return India after living so many years in abroad.
I am an Indian and live in Spain from last 20 years. I reached Spain in 2003 and started my research work, then one by one job contracts and gaining some good friends kept me within in Spanish territory, even within one city.
I know very well it´s tough finding friends at a new place where social culture, thinking, communication language, tradition and more important, body colour, are different. India is completely different from Spain. There is no any relation and comparison India to Spain.
I remember when I arrived to Granada, a city situated at southern Spain, it seems me like I am living in a jail. People are talking in Spanish which I was unable to understand. They looked at me with very strange eye and sometime I was afraid. Still few people see me with strange eye but I have no problem with them. May be they have never seen an Indian person but i meet every day many peoples of different countries and talk with them in three language which I know.
Two and three times I have been attacked, and one time I have been followed by peoples considering that I am illegal immigrant and they can trap me easily, even they offered me a job and a house etc.
I remember many times peoples of the religious groups stopped me and tried to convince me that I must join their religious groups.
Moreover, all these events happened and still some time I have to face. Now I become use to.
The happy thing for me is I succeed to make few friends in Spain and incorporate in Spanish society. I know many of you think I married with some Spanish girl, thus, I succeed to incorporate in Spanish society. Then, you are wrong. I am a social person little bit but also it is truth I am very tough person. I am good if you are good with me, otherwise I start to ignore you. Yes, I never harm and had harmed any one intentionally. Unintentionally I don´t know. Yes, I suffer regularly with comments that create stress unnecessary and normally I engulf most of them showing that nothing happens. I have a tolerable behaviour which we need for surviving a place where no one is from your place or family. You are alone and you have to fight for surviving.
Thus, the summary of the story is I am totally adjusted in Spain now on living 20 years.
Now I have to return on main question "It is good to return India after 20 years living in Spain".
I am fighting with this question from last 2-3 years. My family in India does not agree with my stay in Spain. They continuously are saying to return to India and look for a job in India. I discussed this issue with many people including directors of some big Indian research institutions. All of them, including my friends working at top position of public institutions in India, informed me for possibility to get a job in private universities and R&D enterprises but they rejected to get easily in public institutions. Yes, it is possible to get a job in public institutions if I work for long time inside Indian territory.
Moreover, I was looking an answer of this question with an example; for example, someone already has done a shift from Europe or America to India and can share experience. Means I was looking a fact based answer, not only the suggestions.
I remember that one of my students, who is an Indian, when return to India, did temporary works in few Indian institutions, but at last he become a follower of a famous Indian Guru and now he works for him as a Yoga Guru, giving online-offline classes of yoga at national and international level. Question is where has gone his trainings of many years in science and research fields.
I have one more example. He was my classmate at college, then, he spent many years in Indian institutions, and after that he lived few years in USA for research works. I considered he was a well trained person in scientific field. But he also become a Sadhu (Guru) on returning to India.
I don´t know why they preferred spiritual route.
I remember another person also but he returned to India suddenly because he got a job. I am sure that someone was already there making a position for him. Soon he married also. It smells something but I cannot say.
Moreover, I was searching an answer and at last I found one person who belongs to friends circle of one of my friends. He lived many years in America, then in Europe as I have been informed. I took an appointment with him to have a talk over phone, of course, over WhatsApp to avoid the cost of a call from Spain to India. In urgent case I do internet phone call directly to mobile phone of my friends and family members in India, otherwise, I use WhatsApp for doing a call and have a talk. I did him a call and we started to talk. I was curious to know many things. My first question to him was why did he returned to India. The answer was due to circumstances as I was expecting. The kids are growing and we have to give them Indian environment. Many people return to India due to this reason after living a long time in abroad. This person also return to India due to this reason. Moreover, I don´t have any kid, so I don´t have such boundance.
Now he provided me another reason. He lived many places in abroad and worked in many institutions for long time, but he did not get any job to settle at one place. Most of the jobs were temporary. He had to find next job after every few years. So he was tired with this action. Every few years he has to worry for next job. In Europe, first priority is for their own people. This was the second reason why he took decision to return because now India is a 5th economy of the world and has many private universities and R&D institutions who are looking for foreign return workers. Because they consider it may facilitate obtaining the grants at national and international level.
This person got a job first as a visiting professor, then he joins a big private university as associate professor.
My next question was how did he get the job in India. Answer is quite interesting. First, he tried to get one in India by submitting application & attending the interviews from Europe, but he did not receive any positive results. Then, he decided to shift to India with family and searched a job living inside the Indian territory. In 6 months he got first one and then in few months he got the second one. From second job position he is very happy because he is receiving enough money as a salary.
Indian salary is not bad. My friend earns more than me. He is in India at home living with family and I am in Spain at home living alone.
My next curiosity was to know how did he find job vacancies.
His answer was by visiting the online job portals and applying online. He sent me few of them and asked me to start to apply 6 months before you have plan to shift to India because it takes time in recruitment procedure. Moreover, I was happy to know that he succeeded to find one, so I am sure I will also find one. My other friends also suggested me same.
According to them India did and continuously is doing progress towards to people prefer private than public job. Private jobs are well paid now in India and due to this reason, many public job holders are leaving their jobs and shifting to private jobs.
Nevertheless, in public job one has more freedom to go at home any time, take vacation any time, can avoid to go office for few days without informing anyone, less working hours, of course, many others which you do not find in private job. Private job is for showing talent and achieving targets anyhow which is assigned to you. In Europe, we have same pressure "work for achievements, not for satisfaction" and this is same either we are working in private or public institutions.
I did one more question asking him for how he and his family feels now on returning to India after living many years in USA and Europe.
Changes are there, of course, and we have to adapt the situation. American and European facilities are different than India such as climate, road, hospital, bank, school, sport, bar, restaurants, weekend our door stay, visit of some touristic place in weekend etc and above to all, crowd of peoples which we don´t find in USA and Europe but this is also true that India is 2nd largest country in population. Due to the reason of public crowd, we have to spend hours and hours for finishing one task, which we were able to finish in 15 minutes in USA and Europe.
His family, especially wife adapted quickly the situation but kids took enough time to adapt the situation. Many time they complained that they don´t like and they prefer previous house. Even he himself took time to adapt the situation.
But he made a mindset to return before shifting and this strong mindset supported him to overcome the problems of new situation.
Therefore, he recommends me to make a strong mindset first to overcome daily issues which you will face at a new place in India.
I don´t have any family obligation such as kids grow in Indian culture, not in American or European culture, therefore, he recommends me don´t do a shift in hurry. Take your time. When you reach to a situation where you find that it is necessary to do a shift to India, then do it without hesitation. We are Indian by birth, and we know very well the Indian culture and Indian style of living.
I am still looking for few more examples. If you have shifted to India, please contact me contact@Latestfoto.com and share your experience to publish it with this article. Of course, it is to help other fellow Indians who are in a tense situation to decide to shift or not shift to India after living many years in abroad.
Story is still not finished.
Sure, you will buy me a coffee on reading the story.
